Shibu Onsen village is a picturesque street lined with older Ryokan, restaurants, and bars. The local restaurants have an excellent range of local food, but bring plenty of cash as it's mostly a cash-only town and we did not see an international ATM. A coin laundry is located a 10-minute walk away from the Ryokan towards the train station along the main riverside road. The prices are ¥500 for a small wash, ¥100 for 10 minutes of drying time, and ¥100 for soap. A public bus serves the town area and monkey park, but everything (except the monkey park) is within a fairly convenient walking distance. The Yudanaka train station is only 5 minutes away from Shibu Onsen by bus, costing ¥210. Alternatively, it takes 25 minutes to walk there. English information about local buses and trains is available from the helpful Yudanaka station staff. Wake up early to visit the snow monkeys before the arrival of out-of-town tour groups. The Snow Monkey Pass sold by Dentetsu Railway doesn’t offer great value unless you arrive very early on the first day of the two-day ticket."

Beds were so comfortable, snacks and cold drinks available 24/7, and the onsen on the deck was just divine. The bookshop/library is absolutely incredible. The breakfast and dinner is included -Not that we didn't like it as was a great experience and fabulously done on an open fire in restaurant - the food is very traditional so come with open mind and give it a go!! Hotel is situated outside of main central city so you do need to taxi to places which didn't bother us as was so worth it. Highly recommend. Was such a highlight of our trip."

I got the all inclusive package and the dinner and breakfast was amazing and a highlight of my whole trip to Japan. There were multiple courses all presented in the most incredible way. The female onsen had 3 different baths including an outside one. I had it all to myself which was a luxury. There is also a little deck and Japanese garden where you can soak your tired feet in the hot mineral onsen water. It was easy to get to from the train station. I took the bus from the bus station opposite and paid cash to the bus driver as I exited the bus. When I left I took the bus to the Castle, left my luggage in the lockers, did a free guided tour of the castle and then walked a short way back to the station. Matsumoto is a lovely city to visit and I'm so glad I stayed at this Ryokan."

The Japanese hot spring experience is complete with award-winning multi-course dinners, served in private dining rooms. Delicious local specialties can also be ordered separately.
